2011 Ride Route
EDINBURGH RIDING OF THE MARCHES 2011SPECTATOR VANTAGE POINTS
Friends, riders, spectators,
We have just finished the final inspection of the ride route and am happy to report that the ground is in good condition and we're ready for action in the morning.
Unfortunately, the weather has affected the harvest and we have lost a few fields and our now unable to cross Burdiehouse Road. Spectators should note that Lasswade Road and The Lang Loan are going to be the key places from which to see the action. I have amended the Spectators instructions below for your information. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW WHO IS COMING!!!
• The riders will assemble for the start of the ride between 0700hrs and 0900hrs within Todhills Business Park, Old Dalkeith Road (non- equine transport vehicles should park within the nearby Park and Ride facility)
• Drum Estate Canters can be viewed from the southern most point on Gilmerton Road near to Bernard Hunter’s yard between 0900hrs and 0920hrs
• About 0930hrs, the ride will turn right from Gilmerton Station Road onto Lasswade Road and enter the field on the right there to canter.
• The ride will thereafter enter the large field adjacent to the the City Bypass at the top gate and canter along the ridge at the Lang Loan then track the Bypass back to Lasswade Road. This can be viewed from Lasswade Road or the Lang Loan between 0945hrs and 00955hrs.
• The ride will then return to the Drum at Gilmerton Road (approx 1010hrs), where there will be several more stubble fields to be negotiated before returning to Todhills. These canters can be seen from Gilmerton Road again. Spectators can greet the riders at the halfway break at Todhills Business Park, Old Dalkeith Road (please park within the nearby Park and Ride facility)
• The lunch stop will take place at Todhills between 1140hrs and 1315hrs, at the conclusion of which, the ride will make its way out of the Drum onto Old Dalkeith Road and along the Wisp.
• The ride enters the Edmonstone estate from The Wisp and walks down to Greendykes Road, thereafter cantering through fields to Hawkhill Woods at Craigmillar Castle. This section takes place between 1355hrs and 1445hrs and can be viewed from the rear of the Royal Infirmary and Craigmillar Castle Road. Please note that vehicles cannot stop on Craigmillar Castle Road. It should also be noted that if spectators wish to see the ride in the Royal Mile, they should consider making their way there around this stage.
• It is estimated that the ride will travel down Craigmillar Castle Road, Duddingston Road West and Old Church Lane into Holyrood Park between 1445hrs and 1510hrs.
• Between 1510hrs and 1545hrs, the ride will travel through Holyrood Park from Duddingston to The Scottish Parliament.
• The Cavalcade up the Royal Mile to the Mercat Cross takes place between 1545hrs and 1555hrs.
• The Cavalcade comes to a halt at the Mercat Cross at 1555hrs and the Captain and Lass take part in the return of the flag ceremony before the Lord Provost Of Edinburgh and the assembled riders and spectators. This ceremony should take approximately ten minutes before the ride moves off up the royal Mile, Johnston Terrace, Lady Lawson Street, West Port and into Grassmarket, where the ride concludes in Kings Stables Road at 1630hrs.
Remember, Spectators are invited to attend the after ride celebrations in the Three Sisters in The Cowgate, where the traditional singing of the town songs will take place. We look forward to seeing you all and hope you have a great day.
